# Choose an Environment

Compare Local, Sequence, and Mainnet before running an XL1 application.

The environment controls which network receives your transactions and whether the tokens have real value.

| Environment  | Best for                                        | Tokens                                      | Shared with others? |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- | ------------------- |
| **Local**    | Learning, automated tests, and fast development | Disposable local tokens                     | No                  |
| **Sequence** | Integration testing with public infrastructure  | Sequence test tokens with no monetary value | Yes                 |
| **Mainnet**  | Reviewed production applications                | Real XL1                                    | Yes                 |

## Recommended progression

1. Start locally and confirm the application behaves as expected.
2. Move to Sequence and test the complete workflow with public infrastructure.
3. Review keys, failure handling, costs, and monitoring before considering Mainnet.
