# System Staking Guide

System Staking allows you to put your XYO Tokens to work without running a node. By staking, you support the XYO Layer One network and earn $XL1, the native gas and utility token of the blockchain. By locking up XYO through this pool, participants receive XL1 token rewards without any slashing risk, as rewards are distributed from a randomized portion of block earnings.

### How to System Stake

**Visit the staking portal**\
Go to [xyo.network/staking](https://xyo.network/staking).

**Connect your wallet**

* Click **Connect Wallet** and choose MetaMask.
* Ensure your wallet has XYO Tokens.
* If you don’t yet own XYO, you can buy on popular exchanges:

**Enter your stake amount**\
Input the amount of XYO you’d like to stake. Rewards come from the [Step Reward Pool](https://docs.xyo.network/xyo-layer-one/architecture/rewards/step-rewards).

**Authorize the staking contract**

* Approve the staking contract from your MetaMask wallet.
* This grants permission for the staking tool to lock up the selected tokens.

**Confirm staking**\
After approval, your XYO Tokens will leave your wallet and be stored securely in the staking contract.

### Staking Lifecycle & Staking Positions

Each time you stake, you'll create a new staking position. If at any point you'd like to remove your stake, you can with the three-dot menu on the right of a position. Just know that if you do, **you will be sacrificing your current and future rewards in Genesis Staking!**

When stake is removed, you must wait a period afterwards to fully withdraw the XYO Tokens.

System staking follows four stages:

1. **Staked** – Your tokens are active and earning rewards.
2. **Stake Removed** – Tokens stop earning rewards and are pending review to ensure no malicious behavior occurred.
3. **Withdrawal Ready** – Tokens are unlocked and available for withdrawal but not yet back in your wallet.
4. **Withdrawn** – Tokens are returned to your wallet.

Important: Once tokens are in the **Withdrawal Ready** stage, you must actively withdraw them. Leaving them un-withdrawn is like removing money from a savings account and leaving it on the counter—it’s no longer earning and not in your wallet.

Once Genesis Staking ends, rewards will be issued! We'll be consistently updating system staking withnew features that allow you to view your rewards and claim them regularly after Genesis Staking ends.
